Food and Animal Monitoring Expert

The Food and Animal Monitoring Expert (FAME) is a monitoring solution with a transponder and a portable reader. The programmable transponder can measure temperature and movement and store the data.

Also the transponder has a unique identification code. Through the reader the information can be read and stored on a PC.

The Challenge

To develop a transponder for cattle that measures temperature and movement and stores the data.
Given that the transponder application is for livestock the dimensions of the transponder are very important.

The Solution

Bruco developed FAME to meet the above requirements.
The designed transponder consists of:

  • a SIC, sensor interface chip, 
  • a microcontroller,
  • and a bi-directional RF link; the RF link can sent data and command's for the transponder.

The transponder can be configured into the optimal situation for different application areas.

Specifications
The transponder is configured and programmed as described below. Adaptations can be made easily if required.

Dimensions:

  • 60X5 mm, in biomedical glass.

Temperature measurement.

  • Range: -10ºC - +10ºC; Accuracy 0.5ºC
  • Range: 30ºC - 40ºC; Accuracy 0.1ºC

Movement:

  • Range: 0-50g
  • Number of events when a certain level is reached.

Communication:

  • Protocol ISO 11784/5
  • Carrier frequency TX 132 kHz/134 kHz (128 bits/s or 500bits/s)
  • Carrier frequency RX 66 kHz/134 kHz (172 bits/s or 8075 bits/s)

Distance RF link:

  • 0.5 - 1 meter (depends on antenna configuration)

Lifetime battery:

  • 1-2 years, depends on application. 
  • Battery capacity 25 mAh

Possible states:

  • Measuring and storing movement and temperature.
  • Sending data.
  • Receiving data or commands.
    In this state the transponder can be programmed or calibrated.
